The History Preserver Award is given to a person who has done significant work in preserving and interpreting Sullivan County history.

Elsie Winterberger (1910 - 1992)
For Elsie Winterberger, the preservation of the history for her beloved town of Forestburgh was a labor of love. Her reverence for the past originated early in her life, heavily influenced by the era of rural schools and steam locomotives. Her memory and superb recollection of these earlier times were the conduit that bridged the experiences from her youth to the historical crusades that made up her later years. “I grew up in an era that is now nearing its end, and my job as historian gives me all the excuse I need to record those years in photos and words for the town,” Elsie once exclaimed. “I always say what’s on my mind and I don’t mince words. I’ve lived here all my life, I know the history of this town inside out. I even know town history they hoped I didn’t know.” Known for being persistence and with unrelenting energy, Elsie’s spirited advocacy of history helped raise greater awareness for historic preservation throughout the town and county.

Patricia and William Burns
The stated mission of the Sullivan County Historical Society has been no better exemplified than through the endeavors of “Pat” and “Bill” Burns. Through their historical knowledge and organizational skills, the Society has developed an excellence in the preservation of Sullivan County history, from the management of archival material to the day-to-day tasks of operating the County Museum. Because of their stewardship, the Society continues to remain viable, even in these days of economical and technological challenges.

JOHN B. (Jack) NIFLOT (2/10/35 - 6/22/13)
Town of Fremont Board Member and Historian, whose dedication and advocacy for understanding and preserving the history and heritage of the Upper Delaware Valley is best exemplified by his co-founding of the Basket Historical Society in 1980, establishing its museum in Long Eddy and publishing/editing its newsletter, the ECHO, continuously since then.

Wilmer Sipple
The History Preserver Award for 2005 is presented to Wilmer Sipple who is both the Town of Rockland Historian and Director of the Roscoe O&W Railway Museum. In both these roles he has labored for over twenty years to preserve the memorabilia and memories of the New York Ontario and Western Railway. In this endeavor he has shown great perseverance in the face of many disappointments, but as a result of his efforts and of those who shared his dream, Roscoe today can boast a museum complex composed of a Train Order Signal, a caboose, a museum building and a trout car expected to arrive in 2006.

Allan Wayne Dampman

Allan Dampman, a modest and gentle man, is a person of ideas with an imaginative, common sense mind, followed by a resolve and patience in pursuing whatever goal he sets. The choice by the Sullivan County Historical Society of Allan as this year's History Preserver reflects not only the important work that he has performed for the Society and his involvement in commemorating the Revolutionary War battle above Minisink Ford, but also his long tenure of involvement within the whole county community and the significance his contributions have made.
