Another community in the Town of Tusten is Lava. The area was not named on the 1875 Beer's map although a school was shown. When applying for a post office, an early group of residents wanted to call the area Blumenthal. However the postal authorities thought the name was too similar to the already existing town of Bloomingburg. The eruption of Vesuvius in Italy was taking place at this time and the newspapers were filled with stories of the molten lava being spewed over the countryside. Thus Lava was named after Italy's current catastrophe. The Lava post office was opened in January of 1886 and continued operation until January 31, 1934.
